Ok, so you all know how much I love our fine, furry, canine friend. I had to send out a mass warning to anyone and everyone I know that owns, or knows someone who owns a pooch.

Two of my coworkers took their dogs to Petco for grooming. Both dogs have good temperament, been groomed before, and have no history of medical issues.

-Jasmine has a 3 year old Miniature Schnauzer. She got worried because the new Petco (at Baseline and Stapley-Mesa, AZ) she took Lola to hadn't called after 3 1/2 hours. When she called the woman was very unprofessional and asked her if Lola had a history of seizures. Naturally Jazzy panicked because Lola has never exhibited signs of a seizure. When she asked if it had just happened, the woman's response was; "No it was awhile ago, we threw her in a cage till she calmed down, she's fine now we are trying to finish her up." When asked why she wasn't called when the alleged seizure happened, she got little to no response. She immediately, feeling something was off ran to the store. What she found chilled me to the bone and I wasn't even there. There, in the window she witnessed her miniature salt and pepper Schnauzer LITERALLY HANGING by her neck by the grooming collar. Her little legs flailing trying to get on the table as she choked, the groomer had her front paw completely bent backwards and was screaming at Lola to hold still!!!!!!!!!!!! Naturally Jasmine went rushing in and demanded the woman to stop and unleash her dog. Management was involved, and the manager advised her that termination of the employee was possible. (Either way...completely unacceptable). Keep in mind, I know her dog, Lola; so for you skeptics out there that think the dog was misbehaving-that is not the case. She is a very calm and well behaved dog. She has been to the groomers (a different one than this particular store) numerous times, never with any incident.

-Redi has a 2(?)year old pound rescue Rottweiler/German Shepherd Mix. Again Petco (Chandler and Dobson-Chandler,AZ) called her and told her to come get her dog. He had "tried to escape his cage that he was in waiting to be groomed" and was bleeding and they couldn't get it stopped. When they arrived Dre was soaking wet and the towel was covered in blood. They immediately took him to the Vet where he required 10 stitches in his leg!!! It led her to ask, if he really was in a cage, what kind of cage are they keeping him in that he would be able to inflict such a cut on himself? Further, Dre is normally kept in a crate when they are not home, so it is an environment he is used to. He too is used to being groomed and has never had a problem prior.

I did some further research, apparently this is a more common issue than I thought. I've enclosed a couple links to some sickening stories that literally made my stomach come up in my throat. I am fortunate to have a wonderful groomer who doesn't believe in cages and has a small staff, with a small appointment book that allows for close observation.

This link takes you to a 4 month old Yorkie/Shih Tzu mix that was killed, as a result by strangulation they believe...again Petco (Los Gatos, CA)
http://terrierlover.com/?p=190

This link is from the Ripoff Report, it outlines from an old employee the treatment of the animals that are sold at Petco (Tucson, AZ.)
